A little Corn Data

We do have a little corn data from yesterday. In a sidexside comparison of corn by Norcross:
Pioneer P9675am1 - 217 b/a & 21% moisture
Dekalb DK48-37    - 209 b/a & 23% moisture

There was a corn plot taken off for Hyland Seed over NE of Herman. Hyland is a Manitoba-based seed company that is owned by Dow. I was the independent witness and yields ranged from 210-252 b/a with moistures from 19%-26%. It was their plot so I won't be reporting the results here but what piqued my interest was that Pioneer P8906, an 89 day corn, yielded 218 b/a! If you were to look at the yield results and see that this hybrid was 34 bu/a off the top yield, you'd say it was a loser. But think about the fact that an 89 day corn has the genetic ability to yield that much and you'd say that it's performance was extremely good. That hybrid shouldn't be able to compete with later-maturity hybrids when yield is not limited by anything. It has made me think that we will need to interpret data this year a little differently than normal.
