End of Season - Corn - P9917

2012 was obviously an exceptional corn year. The highest strip of corn we weighed was 255 bu/a with strips rarely under 200 bu/a. Here is a run-down of our go-to hybrid, P9917:
- Consistanly at the top of every plot. We never weighed it even at a mediocre level. It was always near the top. It is a 99 day hybrid that is an early silker which silks like a 96 day hybrid. It has outstanding emergence and early growth. P9917 tends to be heavier than most hybrids. It also has extraordinary ability to handle drought as well as it seems to handle a corn-on-corn rotation well. We have seen it for three years now and it has performed in all three years. In 2010, it became the first hybrid that we had ever weighed to go over 235 bu/a. In 2011, a year for lots of brittle-stalk and wet cooler conditions, P9917 was still at the top of plots. In our warehouse test plot, it won it at 203 bu/a and it did not break from brittle-stalk in even the heaviest wind areas. The late-season stalk is better than or equal to comparative competitive hybrids.
- P9917 will be available in all forms of technologies including refuge-in-the-bag, acremax1, Roundup only, and conventional. Seed supply will be tight. This could be the next big thing in corn hybrids as it has been so consistantly excellent in a large geographic area. Contact us soon if you want to jump on this offering.
- Over the years, many growers have asked us for a dominant go-to hybrid like Pioneer 3751 was for many years in the late-80's and early 90's. We think we have that hybrid now. It's P9917 and you'll wnat to try it.

"Heads Up" Plot SW of Wheaton

This plot is located 5-6 miles sw of Wheaton. Harvested on October 16th and planted in 30" rows. No witness here. The results:

Pioneer P0062xr     - 212.96 bu/a - 13.7% - 57.1#
Pioneer P0115am1  - 209.75 bu/a - 13.0% - 59.5#
Pioneer P9917am1  - 216.93 bu/a - 13.2% - 59.8#
Dekalb DKC52-59  - 214.74 bu/a - 13.2% - 59.5#
Pioneer P9675amx  - 197.34 bu/a - 12.9% - 59.8#
Pioneer P9630am1  - 213.04 bu/a - 13.0% - 59.1#

- Not surprisingly, plot was won by P9917am1 with three hybrids on it's heels. The yields were surprising as the corn itself didn't look like 210 bu/a corn. This is our last plot of the year and it's safe to say that P9917 was the dominant hybrid this year with P0062 closely behind it. P0533 was tremendous also but it is a 105 day hybrid so places to plant it in this area are limited. I will detail some of the characteristics of the hybrids in the coming days. I want to look at the yield data from around the area before concluding the blog for this year. October 31st is the deadline for maximum discounts from Pioneer this year and seed supplies are tight, especially for the big demand hybrids such as P9917 and P0062. Contact us shortly to get your name on these hybrids and maxing out discounts.

Starter Fertilizer Plot - Corn

Earlier this fall, we harvested a corn test plot that had comparisons of liquid starter fertilizer vs no liquid starter fertilizer. We did it on five different hybrids and had two checks per hybrid. The results were surprising. Two of the hybrids showed no yield increase at all, two showed very high yield returns, and one was somewhat neutral. Here are the results:

Pioneer P0533am1
- No starter - 205.6 bu/a - 20.6% - 54.3#
- Starter      - 228.2 bu/a - 24.4% - 56.0#
- Starter      - 230.8 bu/a - 25.9% - 54.6#
- No starter - 211.9 bu/a - 26.2% - 54.7#

Pioneer P9675amx
- No starter - 224.5 bu/a - 20.5% - 56.7#
- Starter      - 221.3 bu/a - 19.1% - 57.1#
- Starter      - 224.1 bu/a - 19.8% - 56.7#
- No starter - 223.6 bu/a - 19.7% - 56.0#

Pioneer P9910am1
- No starter - 222.0 bu/a - 22.7% - 54.8#
- Starter      - 207.1 bu/a - 23.2% - 53.1#
- Starter      - 231.8 bu/a - 22.7% - 54.0#
- No starter - 235.2 bu/a - 21.8% - 53.7#

Pioneer P9630am1
- No starter - 218.2 bu/a - 22.7% - 54.6#
- Starter      - 236.5 bu/a - 21.9% - 55.4#
- Starter      - 238.7 bu/a - 21.4% - 55.2#
- No starter - 245.7 bu/a - 22.1% - 55.2#

Pioneer P0062xr
- No starter - 208.1 bu/a - 24.2% - 53.2#
- Starter      - 227.3 bu/a - 25.4% - 53.0#
- Starter      - 242.7 bu/a - 24.7% - 52.7#
- No starter - 234.2 bu/a - 24.1% - 52.6#

The results of the P0062 and the P0533 were 15-20 bu/a increases, the P9910 and the P9675 were absolutely no increased yields, and the P9630 had both an increase and a decrease. Obviously there was a hybrid variation in response to fertilizer. NDSU had a replicated study on this subject so I will put that in the blog here when I get my hands on the results.

Corn-on-Corn Plot East of Dumont

This plot is found east of Dumont 8-9 miles. It was planted on April 27th, and harvested on October 4th, 2012. This plot was actually weighed by our neighboring Pioneer dealers in Herman (Lakeside Seed) for one of their customers, but it provides information that we normally don't get to see so I am presenting it to you here. The plot compared seven hybrids on both corn stubble from 2011, and soybean stubble from 2011.

Corn-on-SB     Corn-on-Corn   Difference    Avg. of the Two
Pioneer P9917am1   -      233.4 bu/a        249.6 bu/a       +16.2 bu/a       241.5 bu/a
Pioneer P9910am1   -      211.6 bu/a        221.1 bu/a       +9.5 bu/a         216.4 bu/a
Dekalb DKC42-72   -      228.8 bu/a        216.7 bu/a       - 12.1 bu/a       222.9 bu/a
Pioneer P9630am1   -      222.2 bu/a        212.5 bu/a       - 9.7 bu/a         217.4 bu/a
Pioneer P9675am1   -      221.0 bu/a        214.7 bu/a       - 6.3 bu/a         217.9 bu/a
Dekalb DKC43-27   -      216.7 bu/a        198.6 bu/a       - 18.1 bu/a       207.7 bu/a
Pioneer P0062xr       -      221.8 bu/a        216.9 bu/a      - 4.9 bu/a          219.4 bu/a

- With pressure on to plant more corn-on-corn, many growers ask us what to plant on those fields to maximize yields. We're not going to suggest that P9917 and P9910 are going to actually increase yields (as the above results show), but it does show that they were most likely to show yield loss from corn-on-corn rotations. The above also shows that although a typical yield loss from corn-on-corn would normally be 10%, we experienced a lot less of the negative effects in 2012.

"Heads Up" Corn Plot East of Dumont

This plot is located east of Dumont along the Johnson Tar. Planted in 30" rows on April 23rd and harvested on October 8th, 2012. Plot harvest was unsupervised.

96 day:
Pioneer P9675amx   - 211.1 bu/a - 12.3% - 57.8#
Channel 196-06        - 204.4 bu/a - 12.7% - 57.7#

97-99 day:
Pioneer P9917am1   - 213.3 bu/a - 13.8% - 57.7#
NuTech 5H-797       - 215.9 bu/a - 13.4% - 59.4#

98-100 day:
Pioneer P0062xr       - 207.1 bu/a - 14.1% - 56.3#
Dekalb DKC48-12   - 203.4 bu/a - 14.0% - 57.6#

- Other than the P9675 out yielding the Channel 196-06, the other two comparisons are about the same. P9917 did not stick out as it has in other plots but did yield about the same as the NuTech. Historically this area hasn't been a Pioneer-strong area but as you can see, our new genetics are keeping pace.

Lande High Prairie Farms Corn Plot

This plot is located 5-6 miles southwest of Wheaton. Planted in 20" rows on April 30th, harvested on October 8th, 2012. Harvest witnessed by grower and Wheaton-Dumont Elevator reps. This plot was stressed for water during July so didn't reach full potential for this year. The results:
Pioneer P8906hr     - 190.2 bu/a - 10.8% - 57.9#
Dekalb DKC43-30  - 207.8 bu/a - 11.3% - 59.8#
Dekalb DKC43-48  - 208.4 bu/a - 11.4% - 58.9#
Channel 192-09      - 212.5 bu/a - 11.7% - 59.3#
Pioneer P9411hr     - 197.1 bu/a - 12.1% - 60.1#
Channel 196-06      - 212.6 bu/a - 12.7% - 60.2#
Dekalb DKC46-20  - 205.2 bu/a - 11.7% - 61.9#
Channel 196-76      - 206.4 bu/a - 11.9% - 60.4#
NuTech 5X-696      - 203.7 bu/a - 12.7% - 60.5#
Dekalb DKC50-66  - 212.1 bu/a - 12.2% - 60.6#
Channel 197-67       - 221.8 bu/a - 12.2% - 59.9#
Pioneer P9675amx  - 214.3 bu/a - 12.3% - 60.2#
Dekalb DKC48-12  - 214.1 bu/a - 11.7% - 59.8#
Dekalb DKC49-30  - 213.8 bu/a - 11.5% - 60.8#
Pioneer P9917am1 - 235.1 bu/a - 12.6% - 60.3#
Dekalb DKC50-77  - 204.1 bu/a - 12.2% - 61.1#
Pioneer P0062xr     - 223.1 bu/a - 12.6% - 58.0#
NuTech 5N-001      - 210.9 bu/a - 13.0% - 57.0#
- Three of the top four hybrids were Pioneer with P9917am1 winning the plot 12 bu/a more than the second place P0062! P9675amx is just barely fourth but it is a 96 day corn up against 99-100 hybrids in the last half of the plot so it gets the nod as far as I am concerned.

"Heads Up" Plot South of Rosholt

This plot was found 10 miles south and 4 miles west of Rosholt. Harvested 22" rows on October 7th, 2012. Plot harvest was witnessed by many including the growers.

Wensman W7360    - 173.6 bu/a - 13.3% - 58.8#      103 day
Pioneer P9917am1  - 184.4 bu/a - 12.8% - 60.0#       99 day

Dekalb DKC50-66  - 172.5 bu/a - 12.3% - 59.6#       100 day
Pioneer P9675amx  - 176.8 bu/a - 12.2% - 59.9#        96 day

Dekalb DKC52-59  - 174.2 bu/a - 12.5% - 58.3#        102 day
Pioneer P0062xr      - 174.2 bu/a - 13.5% - 57.4#        100 day

- It's getting to be a broken record but P9917am1 sticks out again as a top hybrid. P9675amx also sticks out as it is a 96 day corn beating 100-103 day hybrids in this plot. This plot didn't get all the rain it wanted this past summer but the results are still consistant.

Corn Plot South of Rosholt

This plot was found 7-8 miles south of Rosholt and 1 1/2 mile east. 30" rows planted on May 2nd, harvested on October 5th, 2012. Very large plot as we harvested 8 rows wide for 1600 feet. Plot was recorded by and I was assisted by Maria Harvey of Seeds 2000.
Pioneer P0533          - 236.4 bu/a - 16.6% - 58.8#
Pioneer P9675amx   - 222.9 bu/a - 13.9% - 60.0#
Dekalb DKC52-59   - 253.4 bu/a - 15.3% - 59.4#

Seeds 2000 2903      - 233.9 bu/a - 12.3% - 58.1#
Dekalb DKC 43-27  - 214.4 bu/a - 12.6% - 58.8#
Pioneer P8906hr       - 218.2 bu/a - 12.0% - 60.4#

Wensman W6108rr  - 222.6 bu/a - 13.8% - 58.8#
- Three of the top five were Pioneer, P0533, P0062, and P9917. No surprises as they have been leading the pack all fall now, especially P9917! I highlighted the Seeds 2000 2903 as it had a very good yield for a 90 day corn. Very good plot with lots of the top competitors.

Yost/Magnuson Corn Plot

This plot is 7-8 miles north of Wheaton. Planted on May 10 in 30" rows and harvested on October 1st, 2012. This field was CRP til 3 years ago and the field conditions are still tough. Consider this a "challenged ground" plot.
Pioneer P8906hr   -  196.2 bu/a - 13.6% - 58.3#
Pioneer P9411hr   -  173.3 bu/a - 15.1% - 57.6#
Pioneer P9630hr   -  201.3 bu/a - 17.4% - 56.6#
Dekalb DKC46-20 - 196.2 bu/a - 16.5% - 57.1#
Pioneer P9675amx - 197.1 bu/a - 16.1% - 58.3#
Pioneer P9910am1 - 197.9 bu/a - 16.7% - 55.2#
Pioneer P9917am1 - 203.8 bu/a - 17.0% - 56.0#
Pioneer P0062xr     - 205.4 bu/a - 18.1% - 54.4#
- Not alot of variance between hybrids. Note that P9917 is again right near the top. There is a definite trend being set for that hybrid.

"Heads Up" Plot 6-7 miles SE of Dumont

This plot comes from a beautiful field of corn southeast of Dumont. Planted in 30" rows at a population of 34,000/acre. Harvested on October 2nd, 2012. Very nice even plot. The grower was present for much of the plot. Results are:
96-98 day:
Pioneer P9675amx   - 223.8 bu/a - 13.1% - 58.8#
Dekalb DKC48-37   - 218.4 bu/a - 12.6% - 59.4#
99-100 day:
Pioneer P9917am1   - 239.1 bu/a - 14.3% - 59.1#
Dekalb DKC50-66   - 230.4 bu/a - 13.1% - 58.8#
100-102 day:
Pioneer P0062xr       - 255.6 bu/a - 14.2% - 56.7#
Dekalb DKC52-59   - 249.1 bu/a - 14.2% - 58.3#

As you can see, excellent yields. All six hybrids looked beautiful with great stands and standing good. The plot was in the middle of a field so it was a real good test. There were no bad hybrids in the bunch. The first and third comparisons are fairly even in results but the P9917am1 in the second comparison showed to be a clear winner. P9917 continues to be impressive.

"Heads Up" Plot East of Wheaton

This plot was located 3 miles east of Wheaton along Hwy 27. Planted on April 26th and harvested on October 1, 2012. I have re-grouped the results to reflect how the hybrids should stack up against similar maturity hybrids. The Dekalb rep was on hand for much of the plot. The results are:
 - Early Hybrids
Dekalb DKC 43-27 - 209.3 bu/a - 12.4% - 59.3#
 - 96 day Hybrids
Pioneer P9675amx  - 216.9 bu/a - 13.9% - 58.5#
Dekalb DKC 46-07 - 197.5 bu/a - 14.1% - 60.2#
Dekalb DKC 46-20 - 215.4 bu/a - 13.5% - 59.9#
 - Late Hybrids
Pioneer P9917am1 - 236.5 bu/a - 15.5% - 58.3#
Pioneer P0062xr     - 224.5 bu/a - 15.3% - 56.7#

- The intent of the "Heads Up" plots are to match similar maturity hybrids but this test didn't match up real well. The easy winner in this plot however is still P9917am1 at 236.5 bu/a. If the 96 day hybrids yielded 215 bu/a, then we could expect P9917am1 to yield 220 bu/a just because of maturity. Here however, P9917am1 yielded 20 bu/a more than the 96 day hybrids so it is a clear winner in this plot.

"Heads Up" Plot west of Dumont

This plot is west of Dumont 3-4 miles. Planted in 30" rows on May 3rd, harvested on October 1, 2012. The results:
- 96-Day Hybrids
Pioneer P9675amx - 202.3 bu/a - 13.2% - 59.7#
Pioneer P9630am1 - 195.2 bu/a - 13.6% - 58.7#

- 98-Day Hybrids
Pioneer P9917am1 - 218.1 bu/a - 15.1% - 58.7#
Dekalb DKC48-12 - 196.4 bu/a - 12.8% - 59.9#

- 100-Day Hybrids
Pioneer P0062xr     - 206.3 bu/a - 14.4% - 57.0#
Dekalb DKC50-66 - 206.6 bu/a - 13.5% - 58.7#
Dekalb DKC50-66 - 202.0 bu/a - 13.6% - 58.4#
Pioneer P0062xr     - 206.5 bu/a - 14.6% - 56.6#

- The plot had an area on one end that not all of the hybrids reacted well to. The P9630 and the Dekalb 48-12 strips showed alot of variability in heighth and it was reflected in the yields of those two hybrids. P9917 was not bothered at all by that area. A big win here for P9917 but let's wait until we have a few more weighings in before declaring vistory.

Brunkow Competitive Plot

This plot is found south and west of Herman on the eastern edge of our sales area. It was 8 rows wide and a full 1/2 mile long for each hybrid. It has quite a few different products for you to look at. The results were given to me in the order they finished for yield so I will report it the same way.
1- Dekalb DKC52-61      - 232.03 bu/a - 19.2% - 57.4#  102 day

23-Dairyland 9494           - 175.61 bu/a - 16.0% - 58.2#   94 day
Taking two of the top four spots for Pioneer was pretty good considering how many entries there were. Pioneer P0533 took some of our local plots as well. It is listed as a 105 day corn but it silks very early. At one time in our warehouse plot in August, there were only a handful of hybrids that were denting. Everything earlier than 94 day maturity was denting but only two hybrids later than 94 day were denting and they were P9917 and P0533! So it does act a lot earlier than a 105 day. We'll keep our eye on it to see if we can find areas to use as it's yield has been outstanding. P9917 continues to be outstanding everywhere we check it. We have seen it for three years now and we still haven't seen it be even mediocre, it's always near the top or at the top.

McClernon Test Plot

This plot is eleven miles north of Wheaton. It was a Mycogen plot that let us put some Pioneer hybrids in. The Mycogen part of the plot had quite a few experimental numbers in it which I don't know if will be advanced so we will only report the non-experimentals.
Mycogen 2R287     - 196.2 bu/a - 17.2% - 56#
Mycogen 2J339      - 180.4 bu/a - 15.1% - 59#
Mycogen 2D355     - 200.1 bu/a - 15.8% - 58#
Mycogen 2A399     - 183.0 bu/a - 17.9% - 57#
Mycogen 2T386      - 202.7 bu/a - 15.9% - 57#

Pioneer P8906hr     - 181.5 bu/a - 16.5% - 57#
Pioneer 38H06        - 183.3 bu/a - 16.9% - 57#
Pioneer P9411hr     - 193.7 bu/a - 17.7% - 57#
Pioneer P9630hr     - 211.0 bu/a - 18.8% - 57#
Pioneer P9675am1  - 198.6 bu/a - 17.9% - 59#
Pioneer P9917am1  - 213.6 bu/a - 17.8% - 56#
- Four hybrids formed their own group at the top with P9630 and P9917 leading for Pioneer. The plot was planted on May 10th so we decided not to plant any hybrids over 99 day. If we'd have known what kind of summer we would end up having, we would've planted the later hybrids too.

Anderson Corn Plot

This plot is located 6 miles north of Wheaton on the east side of US Hwy 75. Planted on May 8th and harvested on September 25th, 2012. Witnessed again by Mike Lockwood. 30" rows at 34,000/a planting rate. Very nice even plot. The results:
Pioneer P8906hr    - 208.7 bu/a - 14.3% - 57.4#
Pioneer 38H06       - 203.8 bu/a - 16.8% - 54.7#
Pioneer P9411hr    - 205.2 bu/a - 17.2% - 57.6#
Pioneer P9519hr    - 229.0 bu/a - 16.8% - 55.9#
Pioneer P9630am1 - 225.8 bu/a - 18.6% - 55.4#
Pioneer P9675amx - 211.3 bu/a - 19.1% - 56.1#
Dekalb DKC46-20 - 224.9 bu/a - 18.9% - 57.4#
Pioneer P9910am1 - 232.6 bu/a - 20.0% - 54.2#
Pioneer P9917am1 - 232.8 bu/a - 20.5% - 55.2#
Pioneer P0062xr     - 245.8 bu/a - 22.4% - 53.7#
Pioneer 36V51        - 240.6 bu/a - 21.6% - 53.2#
Pioneer P0533xr     - 237.1 bu/a - 23.8% - 55.0#
Pioneer P0115am1  - 224.4 bu/a - 20.7% - 56.0#
- Later-maturing hybrids dominated this plot even planted on May 8th. If you were at our plot day we showed you some of the benefits of the new drought tolerant corn, P0062. It's the first AquaMax corn for our area which means it is one of the coming drought-toerant corns. We're finding that it can also yield big even when there isn't much for drought.

Yost/Sorenson Corn Hybrid Plot

Plot was located 3 miles north and 2 miles west of Wheaton. Planted on May 9 and harvested on September 24, 2012. Harvest was witnessed again by an independent source, Mike Lockwood. The results:
Pioneer P8906hr     - 217.9 bu/a - 18.2% - 56.8#
Pioneer 38H06        - 204.4 bu/a - 19.8% - 54.4#
Pioneer P9411hr     - 204.2 bu/a - 22.0% - 56.0#
Pioneer P9519hr     - 210.5 bu/a - 17.4% - 55.4#
Dekalb DKC43-48  - 209.8 bu/a - 19.5% - 54.6#
Pioneer P9630am1  - 233.0 bu/a - 20.8% - 55.0#
Dekalb DKC46-20  - 220.2 bu/a - 20.9% - 55.9#
Pioneer P9675amx  - 217.4 bu/a - 19.1% - 55.9#
Pioneer P9675r        - 215.3 bu/a - 19.3% - 56.4#
Pioneer P9910am1   - 216.1 bu/a - 22.4% - 53.7#
Pioneer P9910amx   - 218.8 bu/a - 22.5% - 54.4#
Pioneer P9917am1   - 226.6 bu/a - 22.4% - 55.9#
Pioneer P0062xr       - 221.9 bu/a - 24.0% - 53.8#
Pioneer 36V51          - 207.4 bu/a - 23.1% - 54.7#
Hyland 8377              - 188.2 bu/a - 24.5% - 53.6#
Hyland 8395               - 223.7 bu/a - 18.5% - 54.4#
Pioneer P0533am1     - 205.6 bu/a - 20.6% - 54.3#
- By the results you can see that the May 9th planting date did not treat the later-maturing hybrids very well. Also in the plot are comparisons of the versions of P9910 and P9675 to the new versions for next year which is the "Refuge-in-a-Bag" versions labelled "amx". As you can see, the new versions and the old versions yielded the same so we should be able to sell the new versions with confidence that the yield will be the same. Some of our competitors are struggling with their "Refuge-in-a-Bag" versions not yielding as high as their lesser-technology versions. We also tested some starter fertilizers and such in this plot and we will present those results after we've looked at the data more.

Soybean Seed Treatment Comparisons

We have been doing sidexside comparisons of seed treatments in soybeans for the past five years. The previous four years showed a yield increase in 45 of 55 comparisons, 81.8% percent of the time! This year was a little more up and down in results. We fully expected not to see much yield response this year as the soybeans really did not experience much early stress this year as the bean yields are showing. One variety, 91Y41, did not show any yield benefits. The other variety, 90M80's did. The results:
- Anderson Plot
Treated 91Y41 - 56.6 bu/a
Untreated 91Y41 - 57.8 bu/a

- Jorschumb Plot
Untreated 91Y41 - 60.2 bu/a
Treated 91Y41     - 60.1 bu/a

- Berger Plot
Untreated 90M80 - 43.6 bu/a
Treated 90M80     - 46.7 bu/a

-Yost/Sorenson Plot
Untreated 90M80 - 58,6 bu/a
Treated 90M80     - 59.8 bu/a

_ Yost/Sorenson Treatment Plot
Untreated 90M80                               - 53.7 bu/a
Apronmax/Bioboost Treated 90M80 - 62.7 bu/a
Untreated 90M80                                - 60.0 bu/a
Apronmax/Bioboost Treated 90M80  - 61.0 bu/a

There were 6 other sidexside comparisons of untreated vs treated seed in this plot using different treatment products and in five of those six comparisons, the treatment out yielded the untreated. Stop in the office and you can see the data from those tests. We used different companies products on those treatments and we don't have permission to publish them yet. So in a total of 10 sidexside comparisons, we experienced a yield increase in nine of the twelve comparisons. The five year total would be that in 54 of 67 sidexside comparisons (80.6% of the time), we experienced a yield increase from seed treatments.

Corn Test Plot by Herman

This plot is found by Herman. It was planted on April 20th, and harvested on September 17th. The plot was harvested with both Pioneer reps and Dekalb sales people as well. I thought I'd bring this to you as it has more competitive hybrids in it as well as being witnessed by 2 different companies. It also has tremendous yields so it shows just how high some of these hybrids can go. The results were given to us already ranked by yield so that is the way we'll report it:
1 - Pioneer P0533am1   - 256.97 bu/a - 21.0% - 58.3#
2 - Pioneer P0062xr       - 254.47 bu/a - 19.5% - 56.1#
3 - Wensman W7268     - 253.94 bu/a - 17.9% - 58.5#
4 - Pioneer P9917am1   - 251.54 bu/a - 19.9% - 59.2#
5 - Pioneer P9910am1   - 251.38 bu/a - 20.7% - 56.5#
6 - Dekalb DKC48-12   - 250.13 bu/a - 18.9% - 57.4#
7 - Dekalb DKC43-48   - 247.89 bu/a - 16.0% - 58.3#
8 - Dekalb DKC46-20   - 241.52 bu/a - 17.5% - 60.3#
9 - Dekalb DKC43-10   - 240.61 bu/a - 16.2% - 59.4#
10-Dekalb DKC50-77   - 238.39 bu/a - 19.3% - 59.1#
11-Dekalb DKC50-66   - 238.32 bu/a - 19.0% - 57.7#
12-Dekalb DKC49-30   - 237.10 bu/a - 19.9% - 54.9#
13-Wensman W7140     - 233.12 bu/a - 16.4% - 60.6#
14-Pioneer P9630am1   - 232.94 bu/a - 17.6% - 60.1#
15-Wensman W7110     - 232.46 bu/a - 16.9% - 57.4#
16-Pioneer P9675amx   - 227.24 bu/a - 17.9% - 60.1#
17-Pioneer P9411xr       - 221.46 bu/a - 17.7% - 58.5#
- The main thing I take away from this plot is there were no losers. When 221 bu/a is the lowest yielder of 17 hybrids, that's pretty good! The same Pioneer hybrids moved to the top again though. P0533 was on the top of our other 2 plots so far. P9917, P9910, and P0062 are at the top too.

Jorschumb Corn Test Plot

This plot is located 1/2 mile east of Wheaton on the angle road. Planted at 34,000/acres on May 3rd. Harvested on September 18th, 2012. Harvest independently witnessed again by Mike Lockwood. The results are:
Pioneer P8906hr    - 187.3 bu/a - 17.2% - 56.6#
Pioneer 38H06       - 178.9 bu/a - 19.1% - 54.0#
Pioneer P9411hr    - 190.6 bu/a - 19.1% - 56.7#
Dekalb DKC 43-48- 217.3 bu/a - 19.1% - 56.1#
Pioneer P9519hr    - 197.8 bu/a - 19.8% - 55.4#
Pioneer P9630am1 - 203.5 bu/a - 21.0% - 55.0#
Pioneer P9675r      - 197.7 bu/a - 20.9% - 56.0#
Dekalb DKC 46-20- 201.3 bu/a - 22.1% - 56.0#
Pioneer P9917am1 - 218.8 bu/a - 21.5% - 54.2#
Pioneer P9910am1 - 199.7 bu/a - 23.0% - 52.9#
Pioneer P0062xr    - 202.7 bu/a - 23.1% - 52.7#
Pioneer P0115am1 - 198.2 bu/a - 22.2% - 54.0#
Pioneer 36V51       - 198.2 bu/a - 23.8% - 53.8#
Pioneer P0533        - 215.7 bu/a - 23.1% - 54.8#

- 3 hybrids stuck out in this plot, the competitor DKC 43-48, P9917am1, and P0533. Both the P9917am1 and the P0533 were at the top of the Warehouse plot also. Again, the first 2 hybrids suffered heavy root lodging.

Warehouse Corn Plot Results

On Tuesday, we were able to combine our show plot across the road from the warehouse. The corn was quite dry and yields very good. The plot was planted at 34,000/acre in 30" rows on April 25th. Harvested on September 18th, 2012. The plot harvest was independently observed by Mike Lockwood of Mid-America Distributing(wholesale chemical sales), formerly a Dupont Chemical rep and Syngenta Seedsman. The results:
Pioneer P8906hr   - 169.9 bu/a - 15.7% - 57.3# Test Wt
Pioneer 38H06      - 161.0 bu/a - 15.8% - 53.7# Test Wt

Pioneer P0115am1- 208.6 bu/a - 20.5% - 55.0# Test Wt
Pioneer 36V51      - 214.9 bu/a - 21.5% - 53.7# Test Wt
Pioneer P0533       - 223.6 bu/a - 23.2% - 55.0# Test Wt

P9630 stuck out for the 95 day maturity hybrids and P0062 and P9917 stuck out at the 98-100day maturity. P0533 is a 105 day hybrid. The first 2 hybrids as well as the fourth suffered from root lodging.

SB Plot Results

This plot was east of Wheaton 7 miles and 5 miles north. The plot was 30" rows with 180,000 planted and harvested on September 17th.The plot had a couple low areas that rendered 3 variety strips not useable. The results:
Pioneer 91Y10 - 42.1 b/a & 8.8%
Pioneer 90Y81 - 44.3 b/a & 8.0%
Pioneer 90M80 - 46.7 b/a & 8.2% - Apronmax/BioBoost Seed Treated
Pioneer 90M80 - 43.6 b/a & 8.2% - Untreated Seed
Pioneer 90Y70 - 42.9 b/a & 8.3%
-We had to throw out 3 different seed treatment strips on 90M80 but we did get a 3 b/a advantage for seed treatment over the untreated check on this plot. 90M80's are again at the top. What we're finding is not only is 90M80 one of the highest yielding plot beans, but they are also one of the best beans for whole-field yields. Th average field yield being reported to us on 90M80 is outstanding.

Anderson Soybean Plot

This soybean plot is located about 6 miles north of Wheaton along US Hwy 75. Planted on May 8, and harvested on 9/14. Planted in 30" rows at 180,000/acre. Very even field so results should have a high degree of reliability. As in our other plots, the 1.5 maturity beans and higher are much wetter and we were not able to harvest them yet so we will finish the plot on Monday. For the 1.4 maturity beans and less, here are the results:
Pioneer 90Y70 - 62.9 b/a & 7.5%
Pioneer 90M80 - 62.2 b/a & 6.9%
Pioneer 90Y80 - 62.1 b/a & 7.0%
Pioneer 90Y81 - 57.7 b/a & 7.3%
Pioneer 90Y90 - 60.7 b/a & 7.3%
Pioneer 91Y01 - 56.3 b/a & 7.7%
Pioneer 91Y10 - 60.7 b/a & 9.1%
Competitor       - 67.3 b/a & 11.1%
Pioneer 91Y30 - 67.9 b/a & 9.6%
Pioneer 91Y41 - 57.8 b/a & 8.2%
Pioneer 91Y70 - 64.5 b/a & 12.6%
Pioneer 91Y80 - 57.6 b/a & 18.4%
Pioneer 91Y81 - 63.9 b/a & 11.1%
- The beans in blue were harvested 8 days later.
- New Pioneer soybean 91Y30 continues to show up big. It has been in the top of all four variety plots of ours so far. 90M80 was still strong. A little disappointing yield from both the 90Y81 and 91Y41 in this plot.  Plot harvesting was witness by an independent, Mike Lockwood of Mid-America Distribution, a generic pesticide distributor. We will update this plot as well as Gary's Sorenson bean plots when we finish the later-maturing beans on Monday. Again, as was mentioned at our plot day, the 1.5 maturity beans and later are just on a different ripening timetable this year. It will be interesting to see if that is a negative thing or a positive thing.

A little Corn Data

We do have a little corn data from yesterday. In a sidexside comparison of corn by Norcross:
Pioneer P9675am1 - 217 b/a & 21% moisture
Dekalb DK48-37    - 209 b/a & 23% moisture

There was a corn plot taken off for Hyland Seed over NE of Herman. Hyland is a Manitoba-based seed company that is owned by Dow. I was the independent witness and yields ranged from 210-252 b/a with moistures from 19%-26%. It was their plot so I won't be reporting the results here but what piqued my interest was that Pioneer P8906, an 89 day corn, yielded 218 b/a! If you were to look at the yield results and see that this hybrid was 34 bu/a off the top yield, you'd say it was a loser. But think about the fact that an 89 day corn has the genetic ability to yield that much and you'd say that it's performance was extremely good. That hybrid shouldn't be able to compete with later-maturity hybrids when yield is not limited by anything. It has made me think that we will need to interpret data this year a little differently than normal.

Yost/Sorenson Soybean Variety Plot

This plot is found about 4 miles north and 3 miles west of Wheaton. It was planted May 9, 2012 and harvested on September 11, 2012. Planted in 30" rows and 180,000/acre. The results reported here today will be the variety plot only. There was a seed treatment plot on the north side of plot. We will report all of our seed treatment plots in one blog sometime this weekend after we harvest our other seed treatment plot which will be on about Friday. Note there was no competitor in this plot as this was our last plot planted and we had run out of the plot seed we had been given. This was a very nice even plot throughout. The results:
Pioneer 90Y41 - 63.1 b/a & 7.7%
Pioneer 90Y70 - 64.1 b/a & 8.6%
Pioneer 90M80 - 62.4 b/a & 8.7%
Pioneer 90Y80 - 65.1 b/a & 8.4%
Pioneer 90Y81 - 60.5 b/a & 9.1%
Pioneer 90Y90 - 62.8 b/a & 9.3%
Pioneer 91Y01 - 60.3 b/a & 9.5% (was lodged)
Pioneer 91Y10 - 61.3 b/a & 11.5%
Pioneer 91Y30 - 68.7 b/a & 12.1%
Pioneer 91Y41 - 62.5 b/a & 10.9%
Pioneer 91Y70 - 62.4 b/a & 9.9%
Pioneer 91Y80 - 59.2 b/a & 12.3%
Pioneer 91Y81 - 64.0 b/a & 9.9%
- The varieties in blue were the beans that were harvested 11 days later.
- The 91Y30 really stuck out in this plot at 68.7 bushels/acre! This variety has really stuck out in all three varietal plots so far. 90M80 were good but didn't stick out which has always been the case on this field. We've had a plot on here for 7-8 years and it never has stuck out here. It did beat the new 90Y81's here. The 1.5 maturity and later soybeans in this plot were behind in maturity to the level that we will harvest them later. The seed treatment results were interesting and as mentioned earlier, the results will be reported as soon as we do our last seed treatment plot on Friday.

Jorschumb Soybean Test Plot

Wow! On Monday afternoon we were able to harvest the Allen Jorschumb Test Plot just 1 mile east of Weaton on the Norcross tar. Yields were outstanding and the 90M80 was the overall winner at 69.3 bushels/acre! As we said, "Wow!" This plot was planted in 30" rows at 180,000/acre on May 7, 2012. Harvested on September 10, 2012. This was a very even plot all the way through and the results validity would be very high. The plot:
Pioneer 90M92 - 55.1 b/a & 8.9%
Pioneer 91Y80 - 53.9 b/a & 12.1%
Pioneer 91Y81 - 57.6 b/a & 12.8%
Pioneer 91Y70 - 56.1 b/a & 13%
Pioneer 91Y41 - 60.1 b/a & 8.9%
Pioneer 91Y30 - 68.3 b/a & 9.5%
Competitor       - 67.2 b/a & 11.8%
Pioneer 91Y10 - 64.6 b/a & 10.6%
Pioneer 91Y01 - 63.0 b/a & 8.9%
Pioneer 90Y90 - 63.4 b/a & 8.3%
Pioneer 90Y81 - 63.4 b/a & 8.1%
Pioneer 90Y80 - 63.6 b/a & 8.1%
Pioneer 90M80 - 69.3 b/a & 8.1%
Pioneer 90Y70 - 66.4 b/a & 8.1%
Pioneer 90Y41 - 59.5 b/a & 7.7%
- In this plot the 1.5 maturity beans were very much different than the 1.4 maturtiy and earlier. They were wetter and in this plot they were less in yield. 90M80 at 69.3 b/a not only had yield but had a gorgeous grain sample also. The 91Y30 was tremendous also. 91Y30 is a new soybean offering and so far, looks better than expected. The other new beans did well too. 91Y10, 91Y01, and 90Y81 all were well over 60 bushels/acre!

Warehouse Soybean Plot

The first test plot results are in. We were able to harvest the Warehouse Test Plot on Monday. The plot was planted on May 1, 2012 and was harvested on September 10, 2012. 30" Rows and a planted stand of 180,000/acre. The early maturity varieties had a low spot running through them so to be fair, we're reporting it as two different plots.
The early maturing beans:
Pioneer 90Y41 - 34.8 b/a & 8.6%
Pioneer 90Y70 - 41.1 b/a & 8.5%
Pioneer 90M80 - 49.8 b/a & 8.0%
Pioneer 90Y80 - 46.4 b/a & 7.9%
Pioneer 90Y81 - 48.1 b/a & 8.1%
Pioneer 90Y90 - 47.9 b/a & 8.0%
-Of early maturing beans, 90M80 was excellent as we could have guessed after hearing the first yields come in. 90Y81 was impressive also.
-from here on in the plot, the low spot disappeared and it is shown in the yields!
The later maturing beans:
Pioneer 91Y01 - 53.6 b/a & 7.9%
Pioneer 91Y10 - 53.2 b/a & 8.2%
Competitor       - 54.7 b/a & 8.4%
Pioneer 91Y30 - 55.5 b/a & 8.3%
Pioneer 91Y41 - 56.2 b/a & 8.2%
Pioneer 91Y70 - 57.3 b/a & 9.1%
Pioneer 91Y80 - 54.6 b/a & 10%
Pioneer 91Y81 - 55.6 b/a & 9.1%
- We talked about during our plot day how soybeans 1.5 maturity and higher were markedly different in maturity and had podded higher on the plant which may or may not affect yields. In this plot they were markedly different in development but yields were not. 91Y30 was a surprise yielder as it hadn't looked that impressive. 91Y41 was expected to yield well and it did, but the overall winner was 91Y70.
